Recreation & Tourism

The Charleston area is at the center of recreational activity for the eastern United States. There are so many ways to enjoy yourself in Charleston, you’ll quickly discover why we call our state “wild and wonderful.” From boating the beautiful Kanawha River to riding the wildest whitewater…from golfing the most challenging, picturesque courses to enjoying music of the world…all can be found right here.

When it’s time to leave the workplace, Charlestonians travel ten minutes to Kanawha State Forest for hiking, walking, biking, camping, swimming and horseback riding. It’s just one of thirteen public parks and campgrounds located within the region.

Whether you want to go boating, take a stroll, or rollerblade, head to Magic Island or Haddad Riverfront Park for riverside fun. Local marinas and boat clubs provide river access and amenities to local boaters and water lovers.

Snowshoe Resort, Winterplace and Canaan Valley Resort offer the finest downhill skiing in the Southeast. All are a convenient day trip from Charleston.

This bounty of outdoor adventure can be enjoyed year-round, making the Charleston area a true four-season location for fun!
